Here’s where you can preorder Nendoroid Link ⊟

I felt like looking at that picture of Good Smile’s Nendoroid Link – uh, I mean, performing a service for our readers – so I decided to round up some preorder Link links, for the wonderful Wind Waker figure due to ship this August.

Note! None of the quoted prices include shipping, as… I don’t know where y’all live.

Here’s that Cave Story you ordered, Europe ⊟

On May 1, Cave Story will finally arrive on the 3DS eShop, an occasion commemorated by the amazingly Kool artwork above, tweeted by Nicalis.

Personally, I’ll commemorate this announcement by replaying Cave Story, like I do too often. Or not often enough. I’m still not any damn good at Cave Story.

Yes, there was a calculator for Game Boy ⊟

Long before iOS apps, or even DS “non-games,” the Infogenius series cornered the then-nonexistent market for productivity software on handheld game consoles. Seen above is Spell Checker and Calculator, but Frommer’s Travel Guide, Spanish Translator, French Translator, and Personal Organizer and Phone Book were also sold in 1991.

The most remarkable InfoGenius cart is the Personal Organizer,” according to a ubiquitous column by Chip and Jonathan Carter (seriously, I’ve found it in like five different newspapers). “Simple Game Boy controls let you store names, addresses and phone numbers. You can keep track of appointments and events with the day planner and find dates through the year 2000 with a calendar.”

Man, I hope I get to play this game. These two characters, depicted here in models by Bandai, are pretty appealing! Well, except for the magazine Jibanyan’s reading…

Anyway, these two retail for just 864 yen each!

Before the 3DS Game Card Case… ⊟

We carried our portable games around like this. Or we just left those plastic cartridges loose in our bags. How did you carry yours around?

It’s rad that we can now fit 18 3DS games in a slightly larger space than what we’d need to hold four Game Boy cartridges back in the day. Props to Kombat Kat for the pic.

Angry Kirby: The TV ad ⊟

This “epic” TV commercial makes Kirby seem super tough and destructive, and makes Kirby: Triple Deluxe seem like a God of War campaign or something.

I mean, yeah, he eats a bunch of stuff, but everything else I’ve seen (and every other Kirby game) suggests it’s going to be bright and happy, leisurely paced, and cute.

Happy 25th Birthday, Game Boy ⊟

What a great system you were. This artwork from Eliran Cohen reminds me so much of my experience with the Game Boy, absolutely immersed in whatever I was playing, no matter where I was.

If you haven’t read it yet, USgamer published a wonderful article celebrating the Game Boy, which JC and I contributed to. Here’s a scrap I wrote for it:

My memories playing Game Boy remain vivid, and remembering them now, you couldn’t have them with a home console. Backtracking around Metroid II during a long, turbulent flight over the Pacific. Having my mind blown when I first started Final Fantasy Adventure in the back of my aunt’s Monte Carlo, when your hero gets thrown off the cliff. Jumping through Elec Man’s stage in Dr. Wily’s Revenge, in between eating chicken nuggets at a Chinese food restaurant while my mom gossiped with her friends.

I still return to Link’s Awakening every few years, spending an afternoon by a window. I’m always trying to recapture the days I’d explore Koholint Island, hiding under the dinner table, hidden so no one could bother me and break the immersion but peeking out just enough so the sun could still warm my skin. If I could still fit in them, I’d probably try playing games in a laundry hamper again, too.

Feel free to share your Game Boy memories and birthday wishes!

New Ace Attorney 3DS game unveiled ⊟

According to this Famitsu scan posted by @Lite_Agent, this new game takes place during Japan’s Meiji period (1868 - 1912, a.k.a. Rurouni Kenshin times) and naturally features a new star — it looks like that star is an ancestor of Phoenix Wright. He has a sword, too. Cool sword, new guy.

The full title, according to @CourtRecords_, is Dai Gyakuten Saiban - Naruhodou Ryuunosuke no Bouken, or Grand Turnabout Trial - The Adventures of Naruhodou Ryuunosuke. As mentioned previously, Ace Attorney creator Shu Takumi is once again heading the project, after taking a break from the series with Dual Destinies.

Mario Golf season pass?! ⊟

Wow, Nintendo has free-to-play 3DS games, and now there’s a DLC season pass for Mario Golf World Tour. I guess it’s all caught up now.

Buying the season pass for $14.99 will give players access to three DLC packs: the Mushroom Pack (with Toadette and two courses) on May 2, the Flower Pack (with Nabbit and two additional courses) later in May and the Star Pack (with two more courses and Rosalina) in June.

Each course will be available separately for six bucks, so you’ll save money by getting the Season Pass, and you’ll also get access to playable Gold Mario, whose “Golden Flower Shot” gains coins for every yard you hit a ball.

Trials will be available for all the DLC, with “Trial Tournaments” online.

Every single time you think you’ve encountered The Best Music and you feel like you’ve been livin’ that Beautiful Lifestyle, George and Jonathan manage to pull out all the stops once again and blind-side you with III (works best in WebGL-capable browsers, Firefox, Chrome, Safari on desktop, iOS Safari seems to have issues).

George and Jonathan have outdone themselves once again like no one else possibly could, the lofi-funkitude of GnJ’s jams damn well better change your life. “Rock” is head-thrashing, rainbow-colored celebration opening up a mosh pit in the middle of some primo funk jams.

You can listen to George and Jonathan’s III on Bandcamp (where you can buy and download too!), SoundCloud and Spotify

We love you forever George and Jonathan!

Wow, Gardening Mama 2 came out ⊟

Totally didn’t realize this was coming so soon, but the 3DS sequel to Gardening Mama came out yesterday in North America for $30. Strangely, it’s retail only, but Majesco plans to put a demo on eShop soon.

Anyway, super cute as always, but why are you shearing a sheep, Mama? You didn’t garden that sheep.

[Update: Or maybe it’s officially out April 29? Majesco put out a release saying it shipped today.]

Watch the GDC 2014 Animal Crossing talk for free ⊟

Got 45 minutes to listen to some stuff, perhaps while playing Animal Crossing New Leaf? The recent talk by producer Katsuya Eguchi and co-director Aya Kyogoku has been added to the GDC Vault for free, so you can watch the talk (and see the slides) about the game’s development right in your browser.

All the reports I read out of this were so interesting, I’m looking forward to actually watching the thing!

Ace Attorney’s new assistant: Mikotoba Susato ⊟

I mean, I guess it’s no surprise that the assistant in the Meiji-era Dai Gyakuten Saiban would be a woman in traditional dress, but here she is, Naruhodou Ryuunosuke’s assistant. According to Court-Records, she’s a “lover of foreign detectives and a progressive dreamer!”

The color scheme of her outfit also seems like a callback to Maya Fey’s look, though she doesn’t seem to be related to the Fey/Ayasato clan of spirit mediums.

We don’t get any gameplay, but here’s a glimpse of the 3DS game’s new hero Naruhodou Ryuunosuke (an ancestor of Phoenix Wright) and his assistant Mikotoba Susato. We also get to see what courtrooms looked like in turn-of-the-century Los Angeles during the later years of Japan’s Meiji period.
