Why didn’t we think of this: Pokemon Art Academy ⊟

The latest Pokemon crossover throws the series onto Art Academy! Coming to the eShop and stores in Japan on June 19, the “game” will guide you through drawing and painting creatures like Voltorb, Jigglypuff, and maybe some non-round ‘mons if you’re up to the challenge.

Pokemon Art Academy will include over 40 lessons. I am pretty sure there are more than 40 or so Pokemons, so there are probably a few favorites missing from the list. Maybe we can expect future (free) DLC?

Bonus game, Wii U bundle for Mario Kart 8 ⊟

In a Nintendo Direct released today (and not yet watched by me…) Nintendo revealed the Mario Kart 8 Wii U bundle, containing the game, system, red Mario Wiimote Plus and Mario Kart red Wii Wheel. It comes out May 30 for $330.

If you get that, or any copy of Mario Kart 8, you also get access to a free downloadable game:  New Super Mario Bros. U, Pikmin 3, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD or Wii Party U. Not a bad deal for something you might already have been buying!

There’s more in the video, like new characters (Pink Gold Peach, Baby Rosalina, Mii), new items, and new online functionality (upload highlight reels to YouTube).

Well, Petit Computer for 3DS sounds pretty dang cool. That’s a quote from an interview with Smileboom president Takaki Kobayashi, revealing functionality in the 3DS eShop version of the BASIC compiler, which comes out in Japan this July.

Two more Kunio RPG screens ⊟

This is out today in Japan! I’m still really looking forward to it (and just filled out a survey on ASW’s website begging for a US release)… there’s just something so weird about it, but at the same time so banal. Like, the fantasy setting, the 3D backgrounds… but at the same time it’s Kunio hitting dudes with a stick.

Axiom Verge glitching on Vita next year ⊟

While the majority of indie games announced by Sony yesterday (notably Nidhogg) were for PS4, this one is for Vita! And PS4. And Axiom Verge totally looks like something I want to play, a Contra/Metroidvania type thing that gives you the ability to glitch the game world!

When I say that Axiom Verge features glitches as a major game mechanic, please don’t take that as some self-reflexive fourth-wall-breaking joke about dusty old cartridges or the like. Nor am I going to pile on glitch after glitch just for the sake of being different. Instead, picture this: you have a full game that would be awesome on its own – your dream Metroid + Contra + Bionic Commando + Blaster Master or what have you – but then, what if in addition to thatgame, you were given the means to break past the edges of the world and see things beyond — things that weren’t and couldn’t have been designed for you to see?

I’m on board!

Speaking of things with which I am on board, check out this other Vita game, Drifter, that was also just announced. It’s an “open-world, sandbox, space trading game.”

Your Vita 2000 questions answered ⊟

I put out a call on Twitter yesterday to determine what you were all curious about regarding Sony’s new Vita. Thanks for your help! I wasn’t entirely sure what to talk about, and you all gave me some direction. So here, in no particular order, is the PS Vita 2000 AQ (Asked Questions). And yeah, I’ll start with That Question.

  • gaiages (and others): “Is the lack of an OLED screen really that noticeable?”
Well, yeah, it is… if you have the OLED Vita sitting right next to it. The new Slim screen looks super great, but the colors are a bit washed out compared to the OLED model. But then I read from @sarshelyam and other sources that OLED screens tend to oversaturate colors!

I just don’t know anymore. I just don’t know. Anyway, new Vita screen still looks great, if noticeably different.
  • jmoreen: “does it really feel more fragile than the OG vita?”
I just squeezed it and it didn’t squeak or budge. It seems like it would be weaker with the plastic outer ring, but it’s solid.
  • MaxSnacks87: ”battery life, how the buttons/sticks feel”
Still working on a battery life test, but the buttons and sticks feel totally identical to me! Which is to say they’re still tiny!

  • Steve_Baltimore: “Does the smaller design fit in your hands better or make the unit feel better overall?”
Actually, yes! It’s not so much the smaller design (though the weight is nice!) but the sides of the unit are curved inward now. It’s a bit comfier.

  • brawndwarf: “does the area around the buttons and dpad attract finger prints?”
Here’s the biggest (tiny) surprise about the thing: somehow it doesn’t. The new Vita’s screen glass ends before the buttons, unlike the original which was a solid piece of plastic all the way across. The screen part is still a fingerprint magnet, but the plastic around the buttons is less so.

I mean, it’s still a shiny black plastic thing you put your hands on, but it’s not as bad as the original Vita, which I can never polish enough whenever I have to take a picture of it.

  • Baust528: “On the original model, it was easy to bump the rear touch screen while playing. Is this improved with the new model?”
A bit! The rounded grip things on the back of the new Vita are bigger.

  • Sarshelyam: “How about exact spec comparisons. Weight, width, height, screens, etc.”
    Original: Approx. 182.0 x 18.6 x 83.5mm, 260 grams (wi-fi) or 279 grams (3G). New: Approx. 183.6 x 15.0 x 85.1 mm, and 219 grams. Wait, so it’s a little bit taller and longer? Weird, I haven’t noticed that at all!

Thanks so much to everyone who contributed questions! I’ll try to answer more in a somewhat timely manner if you’re still curious.

Mega Man Xtreme is the first “Mega May” VC game ⊟

Your votes were tallied, and Capcom’s first Game Boy Mega Man release in May is… Mega Man Xtreme, which isn’t quite as bad as releasing one of the numbered ones out of numerical order, I guess. It’s out on the eShop in North America today.

Mega Man Xtreme is a Game Boy Color game containing stages from the SNES Mega Man X and Mega Man X2. I’ve never played it! I’m struggling to remember if I’ve played any of the GB Mega Mans, so anything that comes out this month in that series is going to elicit a “huh, neat!” from me.

New red boxes for Mario Kart 7, New Super Mario Bros. 2

Like Nintendo did for re-released DS Mario games – and for the upcoming Mario Kart 8– Nintendo has reissued a couple of 3DS Marios in new red boxes, a detail that is nearly meaningless unless you’re obsessive enough to be reading Tiny Cartridge.

I spotted the above boxes at Target this week: Mario Kart 7 and New Super Mario Bros. 2, the latter of which was originally released in a cool yellow box. Super Mario 3D Land didn’t have a new box, even though it was featured on the same display and presumably reissued at the same time with the recent price drop.

After today’s release of Mega Man Xtreme on the North American Virtual Console, Capcom will follow with sequential releases throughout May. Next week, Mega Man II and III will be released; Mega Man IV follows on May 15; Mega Man V on May 22; and Xtreme 2 on May 29.

Capcom picked a good month for this promotion, because there are a lot of Thursdays in it.

Remember the awesome Ghost and Ice PokeZines? Good news: we’re getting a Glitch PokeZine next, and it will feature 68 illustrations from 68 artists — that’s double the size of the past publications.

Bad news: that huge page count raises the costs on printing. Curators Jordan Rosenberg and Iasmin Omar Ata are hoping to keep the price under $20 per issue, so they’re seeking donations. If you pledge $3 or more, you’ll receive receive a free Japanese Pokemon card from 1996-2001.

Not tiny, not is it a cartridge, but if there is an Xbox 360 or One in your house, you’ll be able to play Capy’s Super Time Force on May 14, and I think that’s worth mentioning!

Super Time Force is a run-and-gun where, if you die, you can rewind a bit and play alongside your past self – even rescuing yourself and causing a cool paradox! And there’s dinosaurs!

Man, I am going to turn on my Xbox 360.

"Children" Famicase design by Cory Schmitz ⊟

The My Famicase Exhibition show has opened in Tokyo’s METEOR store, and though the gallery isn’t online yet, pictures from the participating artists are starting to trickle out.

Here’s one by super cool designer/Tiny Cartridge site designer Cory Schmitz. His concept:

“THE CITY IS THEIRS.” While the grown-ups are hooked up to their VR machines, the children sneak outside & The City becomes their playground. Create your character, explore the decaying mysteries of The City, & watch out for rival gangs. 1 player.

Nubuwo has a roundup of some other fictional Famicom cartridges shown off on Twitter! And, as I must always mention when talking about Famicase, we had a design in the Famicase 2011 show, made with Ashley Davis!
