“As part of our healing process after the [Kickstarter] failure, we’re developing a new experimental 2D game for 3DS. It has pixels and stuff. No cults.”

-

Renegade Kid’s Cult County Kickstarter didn’t work out, but it’s going to be all right. Director Jools Watsham tweeted this encouraging news following the campaign.

As for Cult County? “Now discussing other options.”

Analogue Nt NES/Famicom system up for pre-order ⊟

Analogue has opened pre-orders for its Nt, the Famicom/NES device with RGB output, four controller ports, and purported “unparallelled” compatibility with American and Japanese games and accessories. “The Analogue Nt is region free, equipped with the original NES controller ports, and even has the original Famicom Expansion port. All with no emulation.”

If I can use my NES Max with Japanese games, or get weird Fami accessories and play US games with them… man, that’s exciting. The Famicom 3-D glasses in the picture are a nice demonstration. And RGB output sounds nice.

Here’s the thing, though. This ultimate compatibility and beautiful hardware design means a premium price. The Nt is $500, and that’s before you change the hardware color or add accessories.

Steel Diver: Sub Wars update on the way ⊟

Wow, cool! Nintendo is updating Steel Diver: Sub Wars to a “version 2.0,” taking advantage of one of the better trends of F2P gaming: continued support. Here’s director Takaya Imamura explaining the changes in a Miiverse post:

In Version 2.0, in Internet Battle mode, you will now also earn bonuses for consecutive victories in Matched Skills Battles. Additionally, owners of the Premium Version will have access to a larger arsenal of subs as they level up, and more subs will be made available for purchase in the Online Shop within the game.

We also received a lot of feedback via Miiverse about players attacking their allies. In Version 2.0, players who torpedo their allies will receive a warning message on their screen, and points will be deducted for every hit. We’re also planning to add a new multiplayer stage, and to continue to fine-tune the submarine stats, among other things.

The matchmaking with friends isn’t fixed, sorry Fran! The update is due sometime in May. Oh, and the image is actually of the Steel Diver item in the new Smash Bros.

Analogue Nt: more information ⊟

I think everybody had questions about the Analogue Nt, the high-end luxury NES/Famicom system we posted yesterday. Analogue put up a FAQ that answers… some of them!

First off, the chipset inside, which ensures such excellent compatibility, is an actual Famicom! “We were able to procure a large quantity of HVC-001 Famicom systems that were in cosmetically undesirable unsellable condition. The plastic enclosure of the HVC-001 systems are notoriously yellowed, brittle and damaged. While the poor enclosure quality left these systems undesirable and sitting on a shelf, fortunately the CPU and PPU inside remain untouched and fully functional.”

Analogue has also refurbished controllers, adding NES-style connectors to Famicom pads and cleaning up NES pads for sale. In addition, “We were able to find a sizable quantity of brand new OEM NES controllers (likely the last in the world) and we have them available for sale in limited quantities.” Holy crap!

According to the FAQ, one weak point may be PAL compatibility, as “it uses the NTSC 60 Hz PPU versus the PAL 50 Hz PPU.”

I’m probably going to keep posting about this thing, as an alternative to buying one.

Tiny Review: New PS Vita ⊟

We used to do a lot of reviews in a list format that accentuated what was “fab” versus what was “butt.” I’ll be using a variation of that format for this review, based on how it compares to the original model.

I’ve covered a lot of Nintendo handhelds in the past, and comparing them is usually much simpler: this one’s big, this one doesn’t fold, this one has a camera, etc.; whereas Sony handheld changes tend to be less clear in their direction. Some things get better, some things get worse, some things are just different. It’s a lot more of a lateral move, I guess.

Basically, this format works well for a device that I really can’t make any strong definitive conclusions about. It’s a Vita!

PS Vita Slim on the right

Here’s what I like about it:

  • It’s thinner and lighter! As a result, it’s a lot more comfortable for my tiny baby hands to hold. All the buttons are the same size and in the same place, and the screen is the same size, so there’s no drawback related to the slight reduction in size.
  • Also adding to the comfort is the new curved design. It’s a bit more contoured around the sides (as opposed to the original Vita, which is in no way contoured), an issue I didn’t even notice until I held the new one.
  • The connector between the Vita and the AC adaptor is a regular-ass Micro USB instead of whatever it was before. It should be much, much cheaper to replace in the event of loss or dog.
  • 1GB of onboard memory makes the thing slightly more usable if you don’t have a memory card (even though you do have a memory card, since the Borderlands 2 bundle comes with an 8GB one).
  • The little pulsating blue light is on top of the unit instead of on the PS button. I don’t know why I like that better. Maybe just because it’s different.

PS Vita Slim on the top

Here’s what I don’t like as much:

  • The LCD screen isn’t as vivid… at least, not when I’m staring at both of them doing the same thing. It looks great on its own, but I might be slightly spoiled by the OLED screen’s wildly oversaturated colors.
  • The front of the Vita is no longer one continuous piece of glass/plastic. There’s a visible bezel around the screen. This is good for fingerprints, but not as good for the overall aesthetic.
  • Still uses Vita memory cards instead of cheaper standards. Okay, that’s not really a gripe at the new model, but it’s not a discussion of Vita hardware without those expensive-ass memory cards.

In conclusion, such as it is: if you don’t have a Vita and you go out and get this one, you’re going to be happy! It’s comfortable, looks great, and happens to be a great value right now (with a free game and a free memory card). If you have the current Vita, I don’t think the incremental changes are enough to justify a new purchase. Screen aside, it’s an upgrade, but not a major one.

What the hell is a CYBER Extension Pad Slim ⊟

Actually, I know what it is: it’s a Circle Pad Pro-style device for 3DS XL that puts a second circle pad between the L button and the extra left trigger. It’s designed for Monster Hunter 4. What I don’t know is why that’s a good idea?

What is a good idea is the Micro-USB connector that allows you to charge the device while playing. If you want one of these, it ships at the end of May from Play-Asia, for $33.

Thank you PepsimanGB! I’m even more excited about this 5-minute Persona Q video now that I can easily understand what’s being said. The dialogue seems really fun!

Between the use of Personas, the in-battle/dungeon dialogue, and just the look of the thing, it seems more Persona-y than Etrian-y, even if only superficially. That should really help ease me into the hardcore dungeon crawling.

Atlus just released some free DLC for Conception 2: “Monokuma Strikes,” a special boss battle against the evil mastermind/stuffed bear from Danganronpa – someone who, I’m sure, would love to hear all about your Classmating, puhuhu!

It’s awesome that this actually made it over, since Danganronpa and Conception 2 don’t share a publisher in the US like they do in Japan. There’s a lot more DLC available, too, both free and paid, that I didn’t notice because it wasn’t Monokuma. Image via Famitsu.

Nintendo making Skylanders-style figure series for Wii U and 3DS ⊟

Called “NFP” (NFC Featured Platform/Nintendo Figure Platform) the characters will allow users to carry save data between games, building a customized character on the figure. They’ll work with the Wii U GamePad’s NFC, and Nintendo will also sell a thingy for 3DS.

Nintendo will show more software and details of this program at E3. Other news out of the latest investor presentation: a Mario Kart 8 “TV” smartphone app, allowing sharing of in-game videos and ranking data. Oh, and a Wii U update that speeds up startup by 20 seconds, coming in June. Okay, there’s some news, good night!

Remember when Sega and M2 added new songs by Manabu Namiki and Chibi-Tech to Out Run 3D? Well… you can buy them, along with like every song ever from the series, in a three-volume soundtrack collection released yesterday.

Volume 1 (Out Run, 3D Out Run, Turbo Out Run) Volume 2 (OutRunners) and Volume 3 (Out Run 2) are $9.49 each on Amazon or $9.99 each from iTunes. Of course, you could also buy individual tracks if you just want one on loop for your cross-country drive.

New Adventure Time game announced for 3DS ⊟

Developed once again by WayForward (published this time by Little Orbit instead of D3P), Adventure Time: The Secret of the Nameless Kingdom will release for 3DS, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC/Steam this November. No Wii U or new-gen versions, as far as I can tell!

Unfortunately, this is not the online multiplayer version of Drop Ball we’ve all been clamoring for. Instead, it “introduces a classic top-down action adventure experience and puzzle-solving element to the franchise, reminiscent of early high fantasy console games.”

"Players take on the personas of both Finn and Jake as they navigate through the eponymous kingdom - a mysterious unexplored region in the Land of Ooo," Little Orbit adds. "They will discover hidden secrets by exploring all corners of a new kingdom created exclusively for the game and encounter never-seen-before characters and creatures."

Still unsure why they just don’t make Drop Ball — it’d be an automatic hit, and would take over the eSports scene.

Senran Kagura: Shinovi Versus comes west digitally and physically ⊟

I guess Senran Kagura Burst worked out for XSEED, as the publisher is following up with the Vita brawler Senran Kagura: Shinovi Versus this fall. The 3D brawler features four different opposing schools of shinobi, and four-player online multiplayer.

It’ll be primarily a PSN release; however, XSEED is doing a limited physical release, called the “Let’s Get Physical” edition, with “a soundtrack CD and “Shinobi Syllabus” containing profiles of the shinobi students, gameplay strategies, and illustrations.”

I don’t know what to say about Tomodachi Life ⊟

We’ve talked a lotabout the mess Nintendo made out of same-sex marriages in Tomodachi Life. We discussed it on the TinyCast with Christian and Fran, where we all expressed annoyance over how the company has handled it, but then returned to talking about our excitement over the Mii-centered life sim.

It’s hard to stay as excited about the game — one of most interesting releases Nintendo has ever put out, and likely a game-of-the-year contender for the 3DS — after hearing Nintendo of America’s absolutely tone deaf response yesterday to recent campaigns calling on the company to add same-sex marriages to Tomodachi Life.

Like, that wasn’t going to happen, right? At least not when the game’s release date is already set for a few weeks from now, and not when the development, localization, and QA teams are already assigned to other projects. Still, this shouldn’t have been overlooked in the first place, and NoA should’ve prepared a more placating message if the resources weren’t available to make the change when it started localizing the game.

But I’m unsure what else to say on the matter. I’m kind of in the same boat as Christian, who put up probably the definitive blog post about it, even if we both came to the same uncertain conclusion: "I find it difficult to sum up all of my feelings and thoughts on what Nintendo could have done or should do with Tomodachi Life into a neat package. Things are more complicated than that.”

I’m feeling like Bill Trinen’s Tomodachi Life Mii right now, just rolling around an NES controller carpet because I don’t know, I don’t know, I don’t know.

Tiny in Catlateral Damage! ⊟

Another cameo by our versatile mascot! Reader @ajkazlouski found the above cartridge in the “Bedroom 2” stage, and I loaded up the demo just now and verified it.

Catlateral Damage, if you haven’t played it, is a first-person game by Chris Chung in which you play a cat determined to knock everything off of all the surfaces in an enclosed room. In other words, a cat. It’s hilarious, and you can play an alpha in your browser for free!

If you’ve wondered whether or not a Tiny cameo would be appropriate for your game, or if we’d allow it, the answer is yes.

Though it looks oddly platformer-y and less Mega Man-y, I’m confident this is going to be my jam. Try new things, Inti Creates! This is cool!
